Shortly after arriving in Ohio in August of 2008, I
discovered that there was a holiday that was on everyone’s calendar that I’d
never heard of, Sweetest Day. After doing a little research, I found that it
wasn’t just an Ohio thing, but a semi-regional holiday. Since it’s a local
thing, I totally embraced it and have found that I like celebrating Sweetest
Day even more than Valentine’s Day. But, if you haven’t totally gotten into the
spirit, here are a few last-minute date ideas that’ll make you look like you
really all in on this special day.
1)
Double Date Pizza Night
Great for hosting dinner parties – especially those that start in the
kitchen. Get your significant other to invite their best friend & their
significant other over for a pizza party. Make it a “special” date night by
making the pizza from scratch. Each person can have a part in the process and
it makes it so much more fun. Add in a few board games and you’ve got a fun
night in and a Sweetest Day to remember.
2)
Natural History Museum Tour
It can be pretty standard to head
out to an art museum or gallery for a date night and on Sweetest Day there will
be plenty of showings and tours to be had. My suggestion is to mix it up a bit.
Instead of heading to an art show, go visit the dinosaurs. Natural History
Museums are the perfect mix of history and fun. Bring your date and your inner
child and have a blast checking out the pterodactyls and velociraptors (yes, I
had to look up how to spell both of those). If you’re lucky, your local museum
might even have a T-Rex!
3)
Groupon/Living Social Scouting
If you’ve really waited until the
last minute and your date is expecting something modest to fantastic, do a
little bit of Groupon/Living Social scouting. Each of those sites is guaranteed
to have a few particularly fantastic last minute date night ideas and the bonus
is that you’ll get it at a discount. Some of my favorite date night activities
I’ve seen on these sites include 2 for 1 comedy shows, go-cart racing,
waterpark tickets, and fondue dinner specials. Your sweetheart doesn’t need to
know that you didn’t have a plan…you’ll look like a rock star and save a mint.
Of course, you should remember, any romantic holiday is
mostly about sharing the day with your sweetheart. Don’t get too bogged down in
trying to plan the perfect night in or the perfect night out. Just plan to have
a good time with your special someone and it’ll end up being the actual
Sweetest Day.
